Philadelphia Free Library: Subscribe to OED Online

Do you like etymology? "The study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history"

- oxforddictionaries.com/definition/etymology

If so, please help me to persuade the Philadelphia Free Library to:

1.) Subscribe to OED ONLINE (Oxford English Dictionary), and

2.) Offer REMOTE ACCESS for all library members.

"The Oxford English Dictionary is the most comprehensive dictionary of the English language. It traces the development of English from the earliest records , and formally from 1150 AD, up to the present day...Many public, university, and institutional libraries across the world subscribe to the OED Online...Most libraries also offer 'remote access'. This means that, if you are a member of your local library, you can access the OED Online for free anywhere you have internet access."

- lic.oed.com/help/

As its name would suggest, membership to the Free Library of Philadelphia is free to ALL PA RESIDENTS and anyone who lives, works, pays taxes, or goes to school in Philly. They also have numerous branches although it is worth going out of your way to visit the one on Vine Street. Northeast Regional Library (2228 Cottman Ave) is open on weekends.

I made both an online and a snail-mail request (see links below), and this was their most recent reply (all caps is my edited emphasis), "No apologies necessary. The REDUNDANCY IS A GOOD THING! We love to hear from our patrons and we work as hard as we can to provide the resources you need. That being said, the OED is a very expensive database and I cannot promise that we'll purchase it. But HAVING REQUESTS LIKE YOURS ON FILE HELPS JUSTIFY A BIG PURCHASE LIKE THAT. Thanks again for reaching out. I hope you find some gems in Gale Virtual Reference Library and Oxford Music Online."

If you would like to make a similar request, the links below are beneficial. Feel free to copy/paste the request (repeated below for convenience). It also can't hurt to make a verbal request by calling their Literature Department (215-686-5402).
