Lisa Fernandez of Portland Maine Permaculture Meetup does pioneering work that helps people establish more sustainable lifestyles, beneficial to the planet, while also decreasing reliance on oil-based farming methods.   Her group has attracted well over a thousand members in a city that has around 66,000 people, with a metropolitan area that brings the population to around 230,000 in a sparsely populated state with just over a million people. Folks get together in work and learning parties as well as sharing permaculture information online.   You are invited to connect with Lisa on August 22, 2012 at 8:00pm Eastern Standard Time, when Merry and Burl will be interviewing her for ENVISION THIS, their online blog talk radio show.

Permaculture is a way of working with the land within one's property and with small scale farming situations where one produces food for self and others.   Permaculture decreases pollution and soil erosion while increasing foods that facilitate the health of people and the creatures that work alongside humans.   Permaculture is sustainable because it mimics the way Nature Herself works.   According to Permaculture ethics, a well functioning ecosystem is defined by a variety of life that includes soils, plants, animals and microorganisms.   This is in contrast to corporate farming which relies on genetic engineering and monoculture cropping (the planting of one or two crops over a large expanse of land).   The latter actually depletes the health of the land and produces lower nutritional benefits.   In its focus on standardization, conventional farming places the overall ecosystem at risk simply because it focuses on one or two crops that if devastated by disease, will devastate the entire system.   Imagine if you were only eating potatoes and steak and a disease occurred that killed all the cows?   You would then be left only potatoes.   In a well varied system, you would have more of a variety thus if one source of food went into low rates of production, others would be normal or perhaps become even more plentiful.

To learn more about this natural way of working with gardens and farms, come join us on August 22, 2012 at 8:00 pm to hear Lisa explain how permaculture and other similar methods of working with the land can help to ensure your health, the health of your family, and the health of the world.   You can access this important talk online at http://blogtalkradio.com/envision-this or by phone at (646) 652-2235.   If you listen live, please feel free to call in questions. If you miss the live show, it will be archived for listening at your convenience along with other ENVISION THIS episodes interviewing visionary innovators.
