"The NSA killed the goose that laid the golden egg." Over a cold beer this past weekend I spoke with a contractor to a large computer hardware company in Austin. He just happened to sit next to me at the bar. He claimed he has worked as a programmer in just about every state in the country and many countries overseas. He posited that because of the widespread surveillance here and abroad by the NSA many more American software and hardware companies will be moving overseas to remove themselves from the ubiquitous surveillance web. He spoke of some new forms of operating systems and servers that can thwart the efforts of the NSA. The irony here is sad and delicious -- because of its megalomania and hubris, the NSA has hurt the USA financially and possibly caused the wider world to develop counter measures that will...what? My new beer drinking buddy went on to say, "I built my first radio when I was ten years old, kids in India and China are doing this kinda thing now, we just don't get it, if you know what I mean."
