Wed, Mar 19, 2:30PM: Panel: Women and Trade: Why the Trans-Pacific Partnership is a Feminist Issue While trade liberalization has been touted as a key driver of development, the Trans-Pacific Partnership is the most recent example of an alliance that threatens to enrich and protect corporations at the expense of the livelihoods of the most vulnerable, including rural, indigenous, and urban women living in poverty. The secrecy in which the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement is being negotiated has not prevented the disclosure of deeply concerning aspects of the proposed agreement. This panel will consider the way in which the TPPA undermines the ability of governments to fulfill their domestic social, environmental and economic goals, with focus on the grave implications this has for women.
