   PAST EVENT

Location: C St. SW and Capitol St SE, two blocks west of Capitol South Metro

Make history March 2, 2009 in Washington, D.C.

Be part of the largest mass civil disobedience for the climate in U.S. history.

You know there is a climate crisis. You know we have to solve it. It’s time to take our action to the next level.

With a new administration and a new Congress, we have a window of opportunity. But we have to open it — together.

On March 2, join thousands of people in a multi-generational act of civil disobedience at the Capitol Power Plant — a plant that powers Congress with dirty energy and symbolizes a past that cannot be our future. Let’s use this as a rallying cry for a clean energy economy that will protect the health of our families, our climate, and our future.

This will be a peaceful demonstration, carried out in a spirit of hope and not rancor. We will be there in our dress clothes, and ask the same of you.

It’s time to take a stand on global warming. We can’t wait any longer for the changes we KNOW we can, and must, make today.

Organization: Capitol Climate Action

Directions:

We will be gathering at 1:00pm on March 2nd, at the Spirit of Justice Park in Washington DC (C St SW & Capitol St SE). It is near the Capitol South Metro, and there will be greeters available to direct people. From there, we will march just a few blocks to the power plant.

We expect thousands or people to participate, with large numbers risking arrest in a peaceful act of civil disobedience, surround the plant, disrupting access, and refusing to leave when asked. Many more will choose not to engage in civil disobedience, and will still be a vital part  of the overall event and rally.

To ensure the safety of all participants, to encourage the broadest and most diverse involvement possible, and to respect the important issues and communities we are supporting, we ask everyone taking part in the Capitol Climate Action to respect the following agreements:

  • We will promote a tone of respect, honesty, transparency, and accountability in our actions.
  • We will use no violence (physical or verbal) towards any person.
  • We will not destroy or damage property.
  • We will not carry anything that can be construed as a weapon, nor possess (or consume) any alcohol or drugs.
  • We will all hold each other accountable to respecting these agreements.

Legal support will be organized for those in need who adhere to the above nonviolence agreement. We will be organizing non-violence and “know your rights” trainings leading up to the action, including the weekend before at the Power Shift 2009 conference.
