Should Medicaid and Medicare be sold to private for-profit corporations?
Ten for-profit insurance companies are creating HMOs to sell to states as Medicaid plans, and to gain federal Medicare contracts. When the market plunged on August 8, federal handouts of $11 billion a month left companies like Unitedhealth, Aetna, Humana and Wellcare outperforming the S&P 500 by 23-30 percent. Profits in these companies are made by not spending premiums received. The human toll comes from the medically necessary services and treatments that the HMO has denied in order to not spend premiums paid by the government.
