U.S. marines shifted from Iraq to Afghanistan
American and Iraqi officials announced on Wednesday that United States forces would hand over control of the Anbar Province, the scene of some of the war's most gruesome violence, to the Iraqi military as soon as next Monday. Most of the departing US soldiers are marines, many of whom will be sent to Afghanistan, where conflict has renewed between NATO forces and a resurgent Taliban.
US Takes Direct Control Of Operation In Tribal Areas
There are reports that the United States has taken direct control of operation being underway in Bajaur Agency, tribal areas situated on Pak-Afghan border against terrorists. So far more than a half a million tribesmen have migrated to other places from Bajaur Agency. The ruthless bombing by jet fighters and gunship helicopters have converted Bajaur Agency into ghost town. Now Bajaur Agency is the most dangerous place.
Obama Moves to Confront Swift Boaters
With threats of legal action, boycotts and a response ad launched quietly to avoid publicity, the Obama campaign has put conservative donors and television stations on notice that 2008 will not be 2004, when Sen. John F. Kerry, the Democratic nominee, waited weeks to respond to attacks on his Vietnam War record and ultimately did so ineffectively.

U.N. Envoy Rebuked For Solo Diplomacy
Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, was once again scolded by senior State Department officials for diplomatic freelancing, but he appears likely to keep his job in the Bush administration's waning months. NATO’s navy delivers weapons to Georgia under the guise of humanitarian aid
“The US Navy destroyer USS McFaul, which is currently docked in the Georgian port of Batumi, carries about 50 Tomahawk cruise missiles on board. They are outfitted with nuclear warheads and are meant to hit ground targets. The remaining NATO ships are currently concentrated in the northern part of the Black Sea,” a source in the military intelligence of the Russian Federation said.
Price the Vote: Federal money for electronic voting runs out, but the meter on voting machines keeps on ticking
In Utah, as in most of the country, electronic voting equipment was sold with service costs that go on forever. While Utah counties now own the voting machines, they rent the software, and the annual price of software licensing and maintenance agreements statewide adds up to about $1 million per year. With HAVA funds exhausted, taxpayers will foot the bill.

Denver Police use Tear Gas on Non-violent Demonstrators
This article appeared in a NYTimes blog, but not in the print edition. I am concerned that the Newspaper of Record doesn't find this worthy of more coverage. The pattern of building jail cells, clubbing photographers, and gasing small groups of non-violent demonstrators suggests a policy decision to use police violence as a deterrent to legitimate political expression.

Are The Missiles in Poland a Plot to Upstage Obama and Give the White House to McCain?
(28 comments) I say the missiles of October II is a lame attempt, ala Nixon vs Kennedy and the steel strike fraud and the WMD's, to scare Americans. I don't know maybe the Poles blind or scared, but this looks like a plan to show that a war hero is better prepared to settle the problem than Obama. I think the FIX is in to have McCain settle the Missiles issue and win the White House. What do you think?

US occupation now being confronted by Iraqi democracy
Until last month, President George W. Bush had been insisting that there should be no fixed timetable for withdrawal, since a pullout would have to depend on “conditions on the ground.” Then he relented somewhat by beginning to talk about a “general time horizon.” It is already something of an open secret that US officials are becoming more frustrated with an ostensibly more nationalist Iraqi government.
