Democracy or Dumbocracy? Only the Vote Counters Know for Sure

That's what the founding fathers gave us--a republic if we could keep it.

How many of our problems result from the tension between the principles of democracy and those of a republic?

Shall we go through this evening's events and outcomes and attempt to sketch them in these terms?

If any poor people had time to think clearly before voting against Obama, the reason was the economy. How is the Republican takeover going to affect the stock market, which used to plunge everytime that Bush opened his mouth?

It soared this morning. Not that I'm a capitalist. If I remember correctly, it soared because of positive statistics relating to the health of the economy. Oh, well.

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we perpetuate something we oppose despite our best interests. Give me an example, quick!

Shall I turn the TV back on? Hear news I don't want to hear?

Shall I turn over a dollar bill and read the words "In God we trust" and close my eyes and hope those words grow wings in these wretched times? All of those times, more and more, is God invoked by a supposedly secular government, at every level. So help us God.

It's not easy to be the first black president with a Muslim middle name. It's far easier to be a teenage unwed mother whose mother lost her bid for the vice presidency in 2008.

Dear God, watch over this new dumbocracy and help us work back to democracy.
