"Please be seated. Thank you for coming on short notice. Friday night, Michele and I taped the 60 Minutes interview that aired last evening to an audience of about fourteen million viewers. We thank you Steve Kroft, [addressing Kroft in the first row] and your staff for your graciousness that evening and since. An unfortunate and uncharacteristically unprofessional incident--for CBS that is-- occurred during that session. It has been a busy forty eight hours for us. . . at a time when the problems of Syria, our economy, the storm damage should be demanding our full attention. . .instead I find myself in an awkward position to be perfectly frank. And I don't like it one bit. Not to be telling tales out of school, but it's no secret that folks on the government payroll have developed an unholy pact with you folks on the media payroll. We all accept that certain things said at certain times are "off the record." It's as old a practice as there is in journalism, and this weekend it bit me. I take full responsibility for it. I will quote here now what I said to Steve Kroft off the record while we were setting up the interview shown last night.
" 'I have reached the point where I don't want to be any part of the government or a system where a lying sonofabitch like romney can get 50 million plus idiots to vote for him. If this electorate is that stupid collectively, then the country deserves the results. If he wins, we are moving to hawaii on the 21st of january and never darkening the shores of this racist backwater redneck evangelical walmart-shopping swamp of limbaugh lovers again as long as I have anything to say about it. After all we did to get health care through, and protect the safety net. . .the karl rove machine and the koch machine and the bush machine pulled their strings and called in their chits and destroyed that good work. How goddamn dumb can people be? Led around by the nose on cable TV and talk radio. . .for all I know that snotty kid of his IS rigging the voting machines in Ohio and Virginia and god knows where else. . .these people are possessed by naked anti-black, anti-brown, anti-islam, anti-anything-not-white-wonder-bread racism and I am goddamn sick of p*ssy footing and tiptoe-ing around it for four years. I am deadly serious steve, this is a sick country dominated by sick minds. McConnell, Boehner, Ryan, Scalia. . .I hate them. . .The bullies are winning, the wimps are down and bleeding. I just will not spend any more energy fighting back when there is so much serious work to be done but from which I am constantly distracted. Part of me will be relieved if I lose.' End of quote.
