MANY GERMANS HAVE NOT YET GOTTEN USED TO THE IDEA THAT THEIR COUNTRY IS AT WAR

Naturally, Germany--due to its 20th Century history-- is more in tune than the weak-USA military leadership in terms of carrying out war crimes charges against their own officers these days. Not-wanting-to-get involved-in-any-more-war-crimes has been a national goal and constitutionally-supported-and-condoned policy and practice of the Federal Republic of Germany for over 5 decades, i.e. since the Bundeswehr's inception.

According to the SPIEGEL, "The Sept. 4 [2009] attack saw German commander Colonel Georg Klein call for a US air strike against two tanker trucks which had been hijacked by the Taliban. NATO rules of engagement in Afghanistan call for the presence of an imminent threat before such attacks can be launched, but given the fact that the tankers were stuck in a sandbank in the middle of the Kunduz River at the time of the attack, many have questioned whether the tankers posed a danger. Furthermore, Klein has been accused of ignoring indications that civilians were present at the site. The attack was the largest German-ordered bombing since World War II and killed up to 142 people, including civilians."

A "parliamentary inquiry is aimed at clearing up the still nebulous circumstances surrounding the incident and clarifying which members of the German government knew what, and when they knew it. Guttenberg himself must testify to the inquiry on April 22", reported Matthies Gebauer of the SPIEGEL.

As I noted above, German citizens feel like they have walked into the Afghan War a bit blind-folded and backwards--as opposed to Americans who are often walking into wars blind-folded but forwards. That is, Germany actually has a Peace Constitution that still prohibits its military running-around-outside of NATO-territory in the middle of civil wars. It was only in Somalia in the 1990s that the German military even had an inclination to go to another continent to do work--again, that event in Somalia was supposed to be for peace keeping reasons, too, not WAR.

Interestingly, this past week was also the 50th anniversary of the German Peace March held at Easter time since the darkest Cold War days, i.e. in the era which found the USA and the USSR getting ready for Nuclear confrontation in Turkey and Cuba (and Europe) simultaneously.

http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,5419780,00.html

"On the Monday after Easter 1960, about 1,200 people marched to the Bergen-Hohne military training area in northern Germany to protest training maneuvers with atomic weapons by German troops. Eight years later, the tradition had spread to more than 300,000 people in more than 300 cities in West Germany."

This year it was noted in most German papers that nation-wide there were only about 240,000 Easter marchers out on the Monday after Easter 2010 (, but there were also events on the Good Friday and Saturday.) Considering that the country is now officially at WAR, there should have been many more peace marchers out this week, but as a whole, I think Germans are a bit confused about their identity in the world in 2010.

Many Germans are confused because they have both (1) a pre-New-Germany-1990 identity, e.g. when the two Germanies were united peacefully, and (2) a post-1995 identity when the massacres by Serbia in Bosnia forced many pacifist-oriented Germans (including the Green Party) to decide to opt for a change in Germany's NATO role. Therefore, even though there are over 60 or 70 percent of the German population currently in favor of pulling out of Afghanistan, German leadership and would-be-protesters as a whole (like many of their confused American counter-parts in Obama's Washington) are currently planning to stick it out in the Kundus Mountains. (Recall that Kundu brought the British Empire down over a century ago.) This is due to the post-Reunification hubris in Germany and a misplaced sense of solidarity for an ideal for the Bundeswehr's role as peace-makers that is apparently outdated in terms of assisting the peoples in Afghanistan in 2010.
