Something Julie Cowan said has stayed with me.
I think I was most surprised that people who come to the soup kitchen are not homeless people who look desperate. Most of the guests are people I see around Evanston. They look like me or you or my father or grandfather. The guests of the soup kitchen may be in difficult circumstances, some may have mental illnesses, and others appreciate the good food and social atmosphere in a life that is lonely. We all need the same things and it is a very thin line that separates us.
Connections, commonalities, and compassion – are particularly welcome these days. This is especially true at holiday time, when we sometimes have to remind ourselves what giving is all about.
