But viewers were also treated to the perfect antidote to this malignant aggression. Because we all live in the waters of toxic patriarchy, the precious gem of the evening did not receive the immediate, brilliant spotlight that The Slap garnered. Nevertheless, it was the answer that everyone hungered for.

When Lady Gaga accompanied a fragile, wheelchair-bound, Liza Minnelli onstage, she said to the audience, "You know how I love working with legends and I'm honored to present the final award of the evening with a true show business legend...She's celebrating the 50th anniversary of Cabaret...Oscar-winning actress, Liza Minnelli!"

As the crowd cheered, Lady Gaga grabbed Minelli's hand, saying, "Do you see that? The public, they love you."

As Liza struggled with her lines introducing the award, and got confused about what to say next, Lady Gaga gently rescued her, and then whispered, "I got you," to which Minnelli replied softly, "I know."

In that moment of respect and compassion, Lady Gaga not only rescued Liza, she rescued the whole evening. Shining like the stars they are, these two women showed Hollywood and the world the gracious way that human beings should treat each other, all the more poignant against the backdrop of the night's earlier altercation. And this is why we will all be better off when women are in charge.
