I recommend that Ahmed's book be read together with Fog Facts: Searching for Truth in the Land of Spin by Larry Beinhart, and The Long Emergency: Surviving the End of Oil, Climate Change, and Other Converging Catastrophes of the Twenty-First Century by James Kuntsler. The first examines information that can be known, as in this book, but that is ignored if not over-shadowed by "spin," while the second examines:
- the pathological implications of cheap oil, rapidly squandered, and all that cheap oil has made temporarily possible;
- the creation of huge, automobile-dependent cities which for a variety of reasons will become increasingly non-viable. The main reasons: the soon-to-skyrocket financial and ecological costs of oil and electricity, with these costs becoming increasingly unsustainable over time;
- the transport of vast quantities of increasingly scarce water over long distances to places (like L.A.) that will experience severe water shortages in the very near term;
- the soon to be prohibitively expensive shipping of cheaply produced goods over very long distances, as from China, by Wal-Mart. (See point #1 to understand why it will become increasingly expensive. Clue: Oil and diesel will soon be very expensive.)
Bottom line: The White House, Enron, various corporadoes and a cast of rather poorly-read bureaucrats came together to inadvertently allow the rise of the bankster elite, the real "terrorists' who threaten America. (As then-Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson said to Congress, "Give us $800 billion or see the entire economy destroyed.") The bureaucrats were following orders and/or had good intentions, while the politicians and their corporate cronies were, and are, out-and-out thieves who looted (and are still looting) the Republic for their own selfish gain, firm in their belief that enough people will be fooled until such time as they are out of office and laughing all the way to the Cayman Islands. And they are probably right.
