The following solutions are ideal, but educators, parents, and students should still push for them, even if that ideal is not reachable yet.

1. A good K-12 public education should not be a matter of a kid's birth or where s/he lives. Funding for schools in poor urban areas must increase, as must expectations for student performance.

2. Secondary schools should embrace vocational/technical training that is relevant for the careers high school grads will face. College bound students should be given the general education that is equivalent to the first two years in college

3. College is where career education begins -- all four years of it.

4. We need to lose our obsession with tests and evaluate students on their ability to become independent learners and problem solvers.

5. College must be affordable, at taxpayer expense.

Instead of teaching Johnny that 2 + 2 = 4 and considering our jobs complete, how about encouraging him to wonder if two might be halves of one?
