editorially backing Bush, made no effort in its news selection and
presentation, to make Bush look good, even headlining an article
detailing nineteen lies he was caught in during the day of 9/11.
In 2004, one suspected that the major holders of invested wealth were
worried about their finances in the face of their having overextended
themselves both internationally and domestically and wanted to
retrench. Money can be made and wars had as well with a Democrat
in the White House. (Recall the hundreds of billions which enriched
U.S. investors with the simple sudden withdrawal and then bargain
reentry of funds from Southeast Asia during the Clinton
administration.)
At the time it seemed to this reader that the deep pockets would have
been happy to see Bush taking all the heat as a subterfuge for a post
election future of keeping basic policies the same with only small
adjustments and tokens of change. Kerry was busy assuring all the
establishment of his steadfastness and intention to manage the war
and the economy without change.
However, now in time of defeat or retreat from war, thieves tend to
fall out as profits from war wind down in confusion and
rearrangement. Corporate governance, using its mass media new-speak,
will be wanting to oversee an election transition in terms of
protecting itself from a possible public backlash, after all the
perks taken via legislation slipped in and under the guise of war
time emergencies.
Republicans in unconstitutionally turning over congressional power to
declare war to the president for yet another undeclared war, and now
dutifully protecting the president and everyone involved from war
crimes charges while calling the war a mistake, the Democratic Party
is setting itself up for the now traditional charge of having
betrayed the troops and caused a U.S. defeat.
All the red in the face angry words of a combative in debate Sen.
John Murtha will not overcome the stigma that comes with proposing a
retreat, especially since Murtha was originally a hawk about going
into Iraq. It looks more like oil thieves having a falling out, and
never mind the effect of Sen. Murtha's heartbreaking references to
the suffering of American families, claiming American casualties are
the main reason for winding it down. Real Americans and non-American
viewers world wide are noticing the absence of value placed on the
hundred fold more Iraqi lives taken, and being taken, because of the
Murtha led agreement with the Cheney/Rove/Bush war plan in 2003.
We just might learn something during this present holier than thou
dog fight, with both sides sensing that the best defense is an
attack. Murtha has already demanded to know, what no one was ever
intended to know, about the insidious use of war funds in highly
lucrative 'contracts' to 'contractors', 'contracted' to 'do things'
outside the norms of military propriety and public awareness. Murtha
wants to know how the war chest was spent; an awful lot of tax payer
money has been floated around and probably has been used by every
armed group at one time or another, and not just by our thousands of
hired gun mercenaries.
This talk of securing Baghdad, by getting all the enemies of the U.S.
intervention, occupation and control of the oil, to unite against us
is strange indeed. Would seem that old dictum, "divide and conquer!"
would extend to 'keeping them divided.' Our CIA, known throughout
the world as a 'Murder Incorporated' and romanticized in U.S. movies,
has so much experience in 'arranging' outcomes in such tricky
scenarios. Can we imagine what it is doing in Iraq now? ("Conducting
covert action at the direction of the President" [CIA web site])
But the danger of blame being placed solely on the Democrats will
flow consistent with past precedent, and by ignorantly bragging about
their 'service' in Vietnam and glorifying their having taken part in
the crucifixion of the beautiful mainly agrarian but highly civilized
population of the French colonies of Indochina, Murtha and the other
'proud' vets perpetuate the myth of U.S. righteousness which plays
well with damning the Dems for interfering with our present 'heroic
war of just and justified intentions.' (And of course neither side
will be mentioning oil during 2008 debates on the Iraq war issue.)
The media is already preparing to give the Gran' Ol' Party the chance
to blame war failures on the donkeys, who approved of the war, but
then gave up.
Only by at least serving articles of impeachment, of course for
something less than war crimes, the horrendous loss of iraqi life,
and stimulating the growth of al Qaida and new anti-American terror
groups which the bombings, invasion and war of occupation has made us
all guilty of, could the Democrats hope to overcome a campaign of
accusations of home betrayal.
If the Progressive Caucus could be allowed to initiating
investigations for impeachable offenses, the Democratic leadership
might be able to have it both ways: acquiesce to our hawkish
corporate governance overall war policy but under protest, and at the
same time let their progressives off the leash and allow them to chew
away at the administration's lies, thus making cries of national
betrayal far less credible. Progressive Dems are few in number, but
they have a dangerously honest bite. One day our progressives might
demand that the CIA be toned down to a strictly good guy info agency
of a open democracy.
Sen. John Conyers, now Chairman, Judiciary Committee, assembled an
unofficial meeting to receive evidence related to the Downing Street
memo and to consider grounds for impeachment already in May 5, 2005.
Dozens of Members of Congress attended. Rep. Kucinich, March 2007,
"This Administration, has openly threatened aggression against Iran
in violation of the U.S. Constitution and the U.N. Charter."
Al Capone was convicted for income tax invasion. Maybe corporate
governance would let the Democrats go after Bush for opening our
mail, as media diverted attention from the more deadly crimes like
torture and homicide, thus pleasing our real rulers, the military
industrial complex.
How do the rest of us fit in? Those of us who watch the pathetic
strutting of elderly grandfather Vietnam vet politician role models,
while our hearts ache in shame for those millions of beautiful gentle
Buddhists napalmed, high altitude carpet bombed - those cute charming
South Asian faces of Vietnamese, Laotian and Cambodia children who
disappeared into history - and our vets strut and remind us that what
they did to them over there was to protect American freedom at home.
Murder and lie about some phony South Vietnam puppet government for
my freedom. No thanks.
Jesus and Buddha teach that we shall have pity on these preposterous
bullies, who are able enjoy their children and grandchildren
seemingly without being reminded of the babies and kids ripped away
from the families of foreigners in the foreigner's very own American
occupied towns and countryside.
