Over the past year, Indiana and Kentucky have seen rising incidents of race-based vandalism, particularly in the Southern part of Indiana and Central-Western Kentucky. Noose incidents at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Purdue University in West Lafayette and Indiana State University in Terre Haute have raised concerns for black and minority students at those campuses as well.
Racism, the potential for racial violence, the history of race based lynching and religious violence are very touchy subjects with some folks. As long as they don’t have to hear about the problem, that’s the way they like it.
Unfortunately for those whose property has been vandalized, for those who have been shot, shot at, threatened, or killed because of their skin color, ethnicity, or sexuality, hiding their head in the sand is not an option. In fact, it can be downright deadly.
