In announcing his “troop surge” last January, President Bush told Congress and the American people, “[The Iraqi government] plans to take responsibility for security in all of Iraq’s provinces by November [2007].”
Six months later (June 2007), the Pentagon moved the date the Iraqis would take responsibility to “no later than” March 2008. Now, the Pentagon is saying its “current projection” is that the Iraqis will take control of all 18 provinces “as early as” July 2008; but they hinted at “further delays”. (International Herald Tribune, 9/19/07)
This raises the question: Why should we believe any forecast made by the Bush Administration or the Pentagon when it comes to Iraq. Their predictions of progress have been proven wrong month after month, year after year. It is always the next six months in Iraq that will make all the difference--if we will only sacrifice a few hundred more lives and Congress will give them another hundred billion dollars or so--things will get better. Over 3800 American soldiers and Marines have already lost their lives in Iraq and tens of thousands more have been permanently maimed. …and for what--George W. Bush’s ego?
Call the Capitol switchboard (202-224-3121) and let your Senators and Representative know that it is past time to end the war in Iraq.
