So much could have been done, so many important domestic needs could have been addressed. But no real substantive improvements to America's domestic foundations were ever initiated. They were given lip service, minimal priority and were not funded appropriately. And why is that? Because America had a president with no vision, one with an agenda of war and military domination, with no capacity or inclination to do what was right for America.
The reality is that the first decade of the 21st century has been a disaster for America and its people. That was a wasted decade, ten years of going in the wrong direction at a time when America badly needed to prepare for the future. The time wasted can never be fully recovered; it represents a blot on our history.
No, we can't reverse history but we certainly can learn from it and never, ever repeat it. Just think of what America would be like right now if, during that decade, America had been on the right side of history. How much stronger and more stable America would be, how much more meaningful and productive all of our lives would be.
