One more country has to be mentioned: Iran.

Iranians are Shia and they are ever so grateful that we spent a trillion bucks and 4 , 000 plus US lives returning neighboring Iraq to the Shia fold. Now all they think they need is a nuclear arsenal to make life complete. We say N ot !  to that.

Having said that, I have no idea how we go about making that happen, unless Iran changes course on its own. Israel will not stand for Iran with nukes (mobil ovens) to finish what Hitler started. But it's hard to see what they can do about it short of war. If those two get into a shooting war over that, all bets are off.

Which is another compelling reason the West should not waste its military and financial resources trying to mediate the thousand-year - old family feud between Shia and Sunni. It's the Musli ms '  Hatfield/McCoy business and it will go on and on until it burns itself out. The idea that the Christian - Judeo West could mediate or police that fight is pure folly.

So, we may well end up involved in a full-scale war in that region, should Iran continu e  its quest to become the newest member of the nuclear club. Sooner or later the world will have to draw the line on nukes. The vision of a world with dozens of small, unstable, aggressive nation-states, rattling megaton nukes around, is not only unthinkable, it's unsurvivable.

In the meantime ,  we need to stay out of the Muslim sectarian skirmishes. They only bleed us, militarily, monetarily, morally.

One more thing :   D on't fall prey to the humanitarian ploy... that we have to get involved because civilians are dying. It's laudable in theory, but folly in practice:

"It is often said that mankind needs a faith if the world is to be improved. In fact, unless the faith is vigilantly and regularly checked by a sense of man's fallibility, it is likely to make the world worse. From Torquemada to Robespierre and Hitler ,  the men who have made mankind suffer the most have been inspired to do so by a strong faith; so strong that it led them to think their crimes were acts of virtue necessary to help them achieve their aim, which was to build some sort of an ideal kingdom on earth."
