The lyrics of the songs on this album seem to be wholly about Neil Young and how Neil Young has evolved or worked as a musician throughout the past decades. His song "Love and War" is by far the best song on the album, for what it says: "I sang for justice and I hit a bad chord/But I still trying to sing about love and war" and "When I sing about love and war/I don't really know what I'm saying." There is the opening song "Walk With Me" and the song "Angry World," too, both reminders that Neil Young is still a legendary musician.
2. The Black Keys - Brothers
This just so happens to be their most successful album to date. With songs like "Everlasting Light," "Next Girl," "Howling for You" and their cover of "Never Gonna Give You Up," this is a project that blended soul, hard rock, and blues to create an album with a stunning appeal.
1. Gil Scott-Heron - I'm New Here
The most-welcome return of the year came with Gil Scott-Heron's album I'm New Here. The title track, "I'm New Here," is a cover of a song by indie rock band Smog. Scott-Heron breathes new meaning into the track with his rendition. His cover of "Me and the Devil" is dark and fresh. His song, "New York is Killing Me," is a warning to all about what urban life can do to a person. Spoken word tracks like "Where Did the Night Go?" and "Running" remind listeners why Scott-Heron has one of the best voices of any revolutionary artist in the history of American music.
