I recently wrote this letter to the Editor of the Sun Post in defense
of a columnist who was being loudly berated for her views on Palin by
some irate readers. My letter to date has not been printed. Even though
I believe the oped forum has had more than its share of articles re
Sarah Palin and her qualifications or lack there of, I thought it wouldn't
hurt to add my two cents. One e-mailer to the reporter even had the
gall to tell her that she looked like a horse! But don't worry. With 20
years of journalism under her belt, she was well qualified to put him
in his place and personally, I think horses are beautiful.
To the Editor:
Kudos to Draus Klein of the Lakewood Sun post for her "Palin: Look this
gift horse in the mouth." People who slammed her for writing their
disaffection for her views on Palin were sometimes obnoxious in their
sometimes crude comments re her and her column.
A lot of them were men who said that she was just jealous of Palin. Well,
I have news for them - I would much rather have a kind and compassionate
candidate for vice president than a pretty woman. They are in my opinion
illiterate voters, and they probably do little if any research at all. However,
Druas Klein's retort to them in another column was classic. I wish that I
could reprint it here.
If they are defending Palin because she is Right to life, well I am too,
but I extend that right oftentimes to animals. No, you don't have to
be vegan as I am to defend the rights of animals. They are God's
creatures too. They deserve our respect and our compassion. Even
Pope Benedict said recently when asked about battery-raised chickens
- Our stewardship IS NOT ABSOLUTE. That means to me that we are
not free to do as we choose to animals -- sadly, a belief which is largely
ignored in Catholic churches as well as in other Christian ones.
On the Friends of Animals internet site I found this article written by
Alaskan Catholic Marybeth Holleman who does not hold Palin in high
regard. I quote her first paragraph:
"This past June, on a cool morning in southwest Alaska, fourteen wolf
pups were pulled from their dens and shot in the head, one by one, by state
biologists sanctioned by Governor Sarah Palin......They had grown into rolling,
tumbling, play-fighting puppies for whom their only care was, when would
they next get to nurse?"
If you want this type of woman to become our next Vice President - that is
your privilege, but I certainly don't, and to castigate a reporter for doing her
job is off the wall in my opinion.
I personally favor the grain-eating animals because I am also one, but I
realize that God made all kinds and I feel that we are to respect their
needs as well- in this case, the wolves. Not only did Palin follow the dictims
of her predecessor - Frank Mukowski who signed a bill to gun down wild
wolves from airplanes, but she went one step further- putting a bounty of $150
for each designated wolf leg brought in.
And, I think the lead title of this article was something to think about: IF
YOU SHOOT WOLVES TO SAVE MOOSE -and then you shoot the moose-
YOU'RE EITHER OUT OF YOUR MIND ----OR IN ALASKA.
