The East Coast Greenway, the Weekday Cyclists, and Transportation Alternatives' East Side Committee invited people to a Close the Gaps in the East Side Greenway bicycle ride. The turnout was about 30 people for this rare warm sunny day in November.
We rode on First Avenue to the upper Greenway at 60th, then rode that to the deadend at 125th street.
America On The Move is nationwide initiative that aims to improve health and quality of life by promoting active living and healthful eating. Best of all, it is free and open to the community of all ages to engage in fun, simple programs that encourage physical activity and healthy eating habits.
Transportation Alternatives is NYC's advocate for livable streets and a strong voice working to reduce barriers to active living. One visible barrier exists along the east side of Manhattan in the form of gaps in the east side Greenway.
We believe that if you Close the Gap in the Greenway, then
you open the way to more active living for thousands of NY'ers. Our Close
the Gap ride is the capstone event for the YMCA's Activate America event
which encourages millions across the country to be more active and to establish
healthier eating habits.
You will be riding alongside community leaders, constituents, and committed residents who believe strongly in the need to Close The Greenway Gap from East 38 Street à ‚¬" East 61 Street, on the East side of Manhattan. The vision is for a greenway that goes all around this great Manhattan Island. We share this vision of an uninterrupted Greenway for recreation, exercise, and of course commuting.
We will begin at Glick Park, east of the FDR underpass at 9:00am. We will ride up the official Gap detour to 60th Street along First Avenue, then all the way to the end of the current Greenway at 125th Street, before returning along the same route, and finally ending at the Vanderbilt YMCA.
