Bob Costas' gun control comments are definitely causing quite the stir on the Right. Yes, I understand it is evil and un-American in some political circles to call for Gun Control, Gun Reform or any kind of regulation on firearms in this country; whether those regulations are common sense or over the line. And no I am not one of those Liberals who want to take your guns away.
I think one of the many ridiculous comments I heard about Bob Costas comments had to come from Lars Larson on Fox News. Larson calling for NBC to fire Bob Costas for having an opinion that he disagrees with, even using Don Imus' and Hank Williams comments as precedent. I mean apparently calling a black women basketball players a bunch of "nappy headed hoes" or comparing Obama and Hitler is the same as calling for reform on a controversial issue isn't even apples and oranges claim: it's a dumb and dumber one. I know Gun Rights are an emotional issue and one of those "if we give an inch, they will take a yard" issues but come on.
Also, I understand that this was a tragedy and gun violence is only increasing in this country. Apparently it also seems that anyone who makes any comment, calling for any regulation of guns must be attacked from the right, as racists are attacked from the left. But, I don't see the regulation need or Lars Larson acting like Ted Nugent for this issue. This shooting occurred with a legally registered firearm. And if the murderer wasn't a football player, this case would have received the same concern as the other 137 gun related homicides in Kansas City for 2012.
I know the answer isn't more guns, especially since you are twice as likely in this country to be a victim of gun violence if you are carrying a gun. I also know the answer isn't to just remove the Second Amendment and it will all go away. This is an issue that will require open dialogue and compromise. And we all know how willing ideologically bent Americans are becoming less likely to be able to compromise.
I for one hope something can be done, something that a majority of Americans can agree on. I just know the answer isn't as extreme as some think. And freedom won't disappear or public safety be threatened if we find an answer All I know is something needs to be done and it won't be easy.
