New York:
"I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers I've been beating them up."
New Delhi:
(CNN) -- An Indian woman whose gang-rape aboard a bus in New Delhi spawned mass protests has died, according to a doctor who was treating her at a Singapore hospital.
"She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain," Loh said. "She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds, but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome."

(Note: a subsequent. more comprehensive post on hate in 2013, Looking Forward To The Hate: Getting Back To Work In 2013, will feature today's Christian Right and it's goals during the year, especially those involving the LGBT Community. For the present post, the subject of hate crimes and aggression in general is addressed)

Aggression is on the rise.

Aggression is on the rise, not only in America but worldwide: American culture may harbor an enormous amount of hate groups, but other countries are picking up speed, primarily against women. The incident in India brought about the fact that the number of j uvenile rapists   on the rise in India. The subjugation of Muslim women, has also increased. On the home front, rape is on the rise in the U.S. military and in prisons.

According to the   Southern Poverty Law Center, the number of hate groups in the country has risen to 1018. These include:

Anti-gay
Anti-Immigrant
Anti-Muslim
Black Separatist
Christian Identity
Holocaust Denial
Ku Klux Klan
Neo Confederate
Neo-Nazi
Patriot Movement
Racist Music
Racist Skinhead
Radical Traditional Catholicism
Sovereign Citizens Movement
White Nationalist

So What?

The world has long lived to accept hatred and aggression towards groups as part of humanity, but overcoming hatred has come to the fore: call it a feature of diversity or simply increased population, the "haters" have been told to STFU more loudly than ever before. The Southern Poverty Law Center has instituted (ala ACLU) lawsuits against hate groups ... and won. It seems one way to deal a blow for tolerance is to bankrupt the hate groups.

But lawsuits aren't enough when dealing with groups and people like Pamela Geller and Frank Gaffney. Geller flatly disavowed any responsibility in the subway murder even though her anti-Muslim posters plastered the trains and the rest of New York was outraged at the blatant enabling of Islamaphobic violence:

First off, my ads are not up yet in the subways. They are not scheduled to go up until January 7, 2013. And even if they were, how does that make me responsible?

Enablers like Geller are definitely responsible.

Enabling The Enablers

The problem with enablers like Gaffney and Geller is that they have friends: Michelle Bachmann's witch hunt in Congress and government was a prime example that enablers still have some power. There are some members of Congress who can be counted as neo-Confederate (Obama heckler Joe Wilson is allegedly one). Holocaust denial reared its ugly head in the form of candidate (Arthur Jones, 3rd Congressional District, Illinois) who reportedly celebrated Hitler's birthday. The powerful Christian Right Family research Council's Tony Perkins has ties to white supremacist groups.

The Future

With hate on the rise and violence enabled by powerful faith-based and secular groups, the year's predictions indicate that things will get worse before they get better and shoring up for the bad times will take stamina and resolve.

Are we up to it?
