Floyd Corkins just handed the Family Research Council its next
anti-gay polemic on a silver platter: "homosexual activists are domestic
terrorists."
Washington
Examiner:
"The conservative Family Research Council, whose Chinatown
building was the site of today's shooting, has long elicited visceral reactions
from left-wing activists. And the antipathy toward the group has only increased
as the push for same-sex marriage has grown stronger."
The exact motive of Floyd Corkins in shooting
the guard at the headquarters of the Family Research Council is not yet known,
but to the FRC, the elements of a hate crime are all there: he told the guard
that he was not targeting him personally: "[d]on't shoot me, it was not about
you, it was what this place stands for", he had Chick-fil-A material in his
backpack ... and he volunteered at the DC Center for the LGBT Community.
The accusatory sobriquets are, of course, flying: Corkins is now an "angry
leftist" and a dreaded "homosexual activist":
The
Conservative Review:
"Liberals are scrambling for their talking points today after
an angry leftist opened fire at the Family Research Council headquarters this
morning. Floyd Lee Corkins II, 28, apparently took issue with the FRC position
on gay marriage."
Amd from the National Organization For Marriage:
"Today's attack is the clearest sign we've seen that labeling
pro-marriage groups as "hateful' must end," said NOM president Brian Brown.
"The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled the Family Research Council a'
hate group' for its pro-marriage views, and less than a day ago the Human
Rights Campaign issued a statement calling FRC a "hate group'"
NOM is erroneous in this last statement - and knows it:
the SPLC labeled the Family Research Council a hate group not because of their
traditional marriage views, but because the FRC has consistently disseminated
false information about homosexuality. The FRC was the first organization to come
with up the term "homosexual agenda" - a fictitious outline of goals
of the "homosexual lifestyle." The SPLC has never condemned
traditional marriage beliefs, but NOM's message gets to some people:
"It will be interesting to see what the Southern Poverty Law
Center has to say about the shooting at the Family Research Council building in
Washington D.C. earlier today. The SPLC and pro abortion and gay rights groups
consider the FRC a hate group because it opposes abortion, gay marriage
and also pornography and divorce."
The Wounded Tiger Attacks
With a growing consensus in the country in favor of same-sex marriage, bastions
of the Christian Right like Family Research Council have felt severely wounded
in the culture wars. But like a wounded tiger, the FRC is exceptionally
dangerous and now it has renewed energy: one shot has already ignited a volley
of invectives and righteous indignation the likes of which this country has not
seen in a long time.
Timing Is Everything
The timing of the shooting could not have been more fortuitous for the Family
Research Council, coming as it does before its biggest political event, the
Values Voter Summit - a must-attend for dedicated "social
conservatives" and a campaigning politicians. Vice-presidential hopeful
Paul Ryan is scheduled to speak as well as noted Islamophobes Gen. Wm. Boykin
and Michele Bachmann.
This year, noted anti-gay preacher, "Bishop" Harry Jackson will no
doubt feature the shooting in his speech.
From the Values Voter Summit Schedule:
Speaker: Bishop Harry Jackson,
Jr., Founder, International Communion of Evangelical Churches and Senior
Pastor, Hope Christian Church, Beltsville, MD
Synopsis: The institution
of marriage is under a barrage of attacks from certain politicians, judicial
activists, and citizen advocates. Recent events including the President of the
United States commenting that he supports gay marriage, instructing the Department
of Justice not to enforce violations of the Defense of Marriage Act and a 9th
circuit court's decision to strike down Proposition 8 in California, makes it
necessary for us to act now!
Is Floyd Corkins The Left's Rowan Williams?
It must be remembered that a man named Rowan Williams was
apprehended before he carried out a righteous assassination on the Tides
Foundation and the ACLU. It was determined that he was prodded by the
demonizing efforts of Glen Beck and Fox News. So is Floyd Corkins Rowan Williams'
leftist counterpart? Did LGBT activists demonize the Family Research Council
sufficiently to warrant a righteous assassination in DC?
If so, the Family Research Council will never let America forget it. With the Values Voter Summit, the FRC will shine as America's persecuted. They will certainly serve only Chick-fil-A sandwiches. Along with Obama's Waffles*, of course.
*Last year's event caused a commotion when an enterprising group came up with free boxes of "Obama's Waffles" complete with an Aunt Jemima-like depiction of Obama.
