One of the most profound Myths about the 2008 Election was that GwB/Cheney/Rove had ANY intention of McCain winning.
Just after the Democratic Convention where Obama was selected, when it became all too clear they'd not been successful in driving a permanent wedge between the Cintons and Obama, their Election Strategy was hatched.
They had never wanted to face the Clintons, and Rove sent Republicans to vote for Obama in State Primaries where cross-Party voting was allowed, to assure Hillary would lose.
Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson had been explaining how totally horrendous the World Economy really was, with multi-TRILLIONS of dollars of worthless Derivatives buried inside investment portfolios of banks, nations and retirement funds Worldwide. Hank finally convinced them he had helped invent Derivatives when he was CEO of Goldman-Sachs, before he moved to Treasury, and he knew what he was talking about.
With a lot of scaled-down economic arguments, Hank convinced them that there would NEVER be any chance of recovering from this catastrophy within the next 4 years. That's when they made a Strategic Decision: pass it off to the Democrats. Let Obama take the heat for not being able to fix it.
Paulson pulled the plug on Lehman Brothers, and the Meltdown began. Among other tricks, like collapsing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, diminished World economic confidence paved the way for his hastily prepared 3-page Bailout Plan, which also absolved himself from any form of oversight. Why would he need such a provision unless he knew how horrendous the situation really was?
The $700,000,000,000 Bail Out was sufficient to accomplish nothing -- though it looked like it might -- and would give enough cover to GwB and his NeoCON buddies to escape the White House before American taxpayers figured out what had been done to them, and rioted in the streets.
Bush Cheney & Co had Halliburton http://www.halliburtonwatch.org/ already construct hundreds of Homeland Security detention camps in case it didn't work, and threatened the US House, on the second go-around, with declaring Martial Law if they didn't pass it. It's all on C-span Video.
What they needed was enough time to arrange an escape. GwB already had his high security compound -- in a South American country with no US Extradition Treaty -- to escape TO. But he wanted to finish his term before skipping out, for the history books. Priming McCain with flagrant and outrageous charges to level at Obama helped divert public attention. They were counting on McCain's brain still being at war with itself, creating his Maverick personality, because of all the fiddling around the Communist Chinese did inside his head for the 5 1/2 years he was a Prisoner of War.
But the crowning touch had been when Rove chose Sarah Palin as McCain's running mate. She was not very bright, so they thought she could be easily managed. And she had an unwed pregnant daughter. Sounded like exactly what they needed. Were they ever surprised!
It almost blew their whole Strategic Plan to smitherines when Palin turned out to be daffy enough to endear herself to a lot of voters. That's why Rove had to come out with his strange prediction, saying Obama might win.
They had to reverse engineer the computer voting machine scam to produce the opposite results from 2004, in critical States like Florida and Ohio. It was tough. But Obama had all the Inspectors looking in the wrong direction. Clever. The Acorn Diversion worked like a charm. Got all their trained pavlovian dogs barking like crazy! What Rove understands is that it's just as easy to play either side against the other.
But GwB is smiling much more now. The whole toxic World Economy is now fully served up on Obama's plate, with all those trillions of hidden Derivative treats waiting to be discovered. Mission Accomplished!
Now. They can all get back to the Task at Hand: shredding as many documents as possible before they leave office.

Here's another short Myth, thrown in as a bonus.
Walmart is an American home-grown economic miracle. Endless aisles of cheap stuff. One of the best things ever to happen to America. My former home County in Eden NC had only 100,000 people, but 3 Super WaMarts. Heaven on Earth. Or is it?
I didn't shop at any of them. I've been an American small business owner for 30 years. I used to go years ago, before supersizing, back when Sam Walton had his Buy American Campaign. When he died, and WalMart started forcing American manufacturers to relocate to China to provide cheaper and cheaper products, with higher profit margins, I quit.
But, I kept watching. Being a student of history, I got more and more concerned when classic small businesses on main streets kept vanishing, changing the face of America. What was the driving force behind this, I wondered. Certainly not being able to save a few cents on plasticware.
Then it hit me. China still lives in the Communist Dream of World Domination. Having seen that militarism had disasterous consequences, they switched to Economic Warfare. Use Americans to destroy themselves. Sell them cheap stuff, and weaken the middle class by collapsing the fabric of locally owned stores that had helped build America's core strength. Eventually, there would be no place to shop for cheap stuff BUT WalMart. Plus they gutted main streets all across America.
This left the proletariat vulnerable, while building wealth in China. It didn't take long for Communist China to start buying up America with profits provided by addicted WalMart shoppers. Now, they also own our debt. We owe the Chinese billions of dollars, moving into trillions. And in our historically weakened financial condition provided by GwB and his NeoCON buddies, it might be a good time for them to move in and take over.
You gotta hand it to these guys: they really know how to invade a country, without leaving home, or firing a single bullet. Use our own free-markets to destroy our middle-class business owners, then buy up what's left, cheap, with their profits provided by the stupid fools who shop to save a few pennies, while sacrificing their Nation.
