A Pennsylvania couple who are members of a fundamentalist Christian church have lost their second child to the power of prayer .
Herbert and Catherine Schaible are members of the First Century Gospel Church , which believes that seeking medical care is a sin and a sign of a lack of faith in God . In 2009 they lost their two year old son Kent to pneumonia after they chose to pray for his healing rather than seek medical attention.
The Schaibles avoided prison time--despite being convicted of involuntary manslaughter--by promising the judge that they would not make the same mistake with their seven remaining children. They were given ten years probation, and their children remained in their custody.
Last week 8 month old Brandon had breathing difficulty and diarrhea, but the family again didn't seek medical attention. Instead, they prayed over his tiny body as he got sicker and sicker.
When he died they called a funeral home rather than an ambulance.
The Schaibles were brought before a judge to face charges of violating the terms of their probation. The judge said
"I am sorry for your loss. Deeply sorry. But in all honesty, I am more sorry for the fact that this innocent little child will not be able to grow up to be what he wanted to be."
Charges have not yet been filed as authorities are awaiting autopsy results.
What the hell is wrong with people?
