A caricature of Arizona law profiling and stopping Hispanics on the street
There's nothing like being completely humbled politically, as the Republicans were in the last presidential election, when scores of Hispanics abandoned the GOP voted and overwhelmingly for Obama.
Of late, the Republican party poobahs are seeing the new demographics and starting to come around on immigration reform.
Repubs. are starting to recognize that demonizing all Hispanics as illegal aliens, not providing a legal path to citizenship (calling it amnesty) and finally stopping the drumbeat and calling for deportation of millions of Hispanics and thus separating families from their children born in America are all non-starters and are a one way ticket to political oblivion on the national scene. It reveals the party has been taken over by the tea party crowd, white only "crackers", racists and other extremists living the fantasy of a white dominated 1950's America. Hello!
For sure the Repubs. control many statehouses and governorships and through gerrymander of districts get many of their House of Representatives candidates elected. But that majority controlling the House are basically obstructionists and many of their proposals are still born, have no chance of being enacted and are so much political hot air i.e. Republican Paul Ryan's economic "reforms" such as privatizing social security and vouchers for seniors replacing the current Medicare system are the equivalent of a hot air balloon way too heavy to even lift off the ground.
