American Jews of all persuasions do not care about Iran. That's the finding of a poll commissioned by pro-peace, pro-Israel PAC JStreet.
The poll, one of the first of its kind, asked Jewish voters a series of questions on the elections, politics and other issues.
Here's the question and the responses:
Q.9 Below is a list of issues facing our country today. Please mark which TWO of these issues are the most important for you in deciding your vote for Congress in November.
The economy ....................................... 62
Health care........................................... 31
The deficit and government spending ........ 18
Social Security and Medicare ................... 16
Taxes................................................... 14
Terrorism and national security.................. 13
Education.............................................. 12
Israel..................................................... 7
The environment...................................... 7
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan................ 6
Illegal immigration .................................... 6
Energy.................................................... 4
Iran....................................................... 0
Separation between religion and state........-
(Other) .................................................. 2
(None of these) ....................................... 1
(Don't know/refused) ................................ 0
When asked to comment on the lack of American Jews' interest in Iran, the response was that they care about domestic issues-- the economy, health care, the like.
They found that the issue of Iran was near the bottom for all denominations of Jews-- Orthodox, Conservative, reform, non-affiliated. The crosstabs show that only zero to one percent found Iran to be a top issue.
Even the issue of Israel was only considered among the top two issues for less than 10 % of respondents. But among those, Jewish women were almost four times as likely to rank it of high importance.
These findings are interesting considering that AIPAC and most US members of congress raise the threat of Iran as an issue that they seem to feel is of utmost importance to American Jews.
