Watching Sen. McCain on TV recently, a thought popped into my mind: This guy looks just like an angry dog barking at the postman. He's almost jumping up and down, agitated, with bulging eyes. "Arf! Arf! Arf!" he goes, but to no effect.
In my mind, I see this picture . . .
It is a small suburban house, with a neatly-trimmed lawn and a chain link fence around the front yard. Inside the fence is a small bulldog, guarding the property, like dogs are supposed to do. In my picture, he is an older white bulldog with black spots and a big shiny black collar with big silver spikes on it. A mailbox is attached to a post, just outside the fence. On the sidewalk, a postman is walking toward the mailbox to deliver the mail, as he always does at this address. The dog always barks at this postman, and the postman always looks straight ahead, disregarding him.
The postman calmly puts some letters into the mailbox and walks away, without looking at the dog, who is still jumping up and down, barking.
And so it is in this campaign.
