On this Labor Day we find an appalling number of Americans struggling with unemployment, job security, lack of a living wage, cost of living, the economy, etc. For the most part, Labor Day has ceased to be a day where the majority reflect on the state of unions or labor in this country. That's understandable when you consider how May Day should really be the day that we all have off like we do today (just do a quick search on the Internet--you'll see what I mean).
In any case, we should celebrate. And we shouldn't spend all day bemoaning how poor we American workers and all the lower classes have it currently. We should refer back to the old American folk songs that celebrated unions (and even newer songs that aren't as classic).
Here are five songs to help you celebrate today. All of them are traditional folk classics except for one. One I slipped in there because I feel today more than ever we need to think of everyman.
