The letter sent to George W. Bush on May 8th threatening impeachment if the Bush administration attacks Iran is absolutely meaningless - and John Conyers should know it! According to Alternet:
The May 8 letter from U.S. Rep. John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., chair of the House Judiciary Committee, to George W. Bush received virtually no media coverage, in spite of the fact that it warned the president that an attack on Iran without Congressional approval would be grounds for impeachment. Rumor has it several senators have been briefed about the possibility of war with Iran. LINK
Mr. Conyers, haven’t you read NSPD-51??? (National Security Presidential Directive 51) The manner in which this order is written allows the President to virtually ignore the Supreme Court and the Congress of the United States! How do you plan on pursuing impeachment proceedings when the President has granted himself the authority to assume complete control of our government? How can the Congress do anything when, with the stroke of a pen, Bush can render the Congress totally meaningless as he assumes the power of a dictator, something that has been in the works for years, but our Congress has failed to act and reign-in this President who Claims More Power Than King George III !
Mr. Conyers, don’t you find it odd that when you threaten the President with impeachment, the mainstream news media largely ignores it? Doesn’t it concern you, as the chair of the House Judiciary Committee that even you aren’t taken seriously by a MSM that only publishes what the White House approves? How does it feel to be rendered ineffective, holding a position that for all practical purposes, the Bush administration ignores, as does the Mainstream News Media?
Mr. Conyers, with all due respect, and I do hold out the possibility that your intentions may be good, but you and your committee are doing nothing more than blowing hot air, and no one takes you seriously, including Bush and Cheney and the many people that refuse to testify when ordered to do so by your committee! At what point in time do you and the rest of Congress wake-up and realize that this Presidency looks upon you and your brethren with utter contempt and will do whatever they want, whether you like it or not! All we hear is “what you’re going to do”, but so far, that has been absolutely nothing except to write letters that are promptly sent to the trash can and issue subpoenas that go unanswered - so Representative Conyers, what exactly are you doing to uphold the principles of the constitution and the rule of law? Committee Hearings and subpoenas have proven to be worthless; the American public knows it, the Mainstream News Media doesn’t even report upon an impeachment threat, so why should “we the people” believe that you’re doing anything more than wasting our time with procedural hearings that never bear fruit?
If the Congress of the United States is serious in regard stopping Bush from attacking Iran, then immediate impeachment hearings are the only method that remains to stop a war that appears to ve inevitable. The MSM does report on Bush’s plans on attacking Iran:
Rumors of War: Is Bush Gearing Up to Attack Iran?
…but over the past several months, several moves by the White House strongly suggest that the Bush administration will attack Iran sometime in the near future. According to the Asia Times, “a former assistant secretary of state still active in the foreign affairs community” said an air attack will target the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force garrisons. Not even the White House is bonkers enough to put troops on the ground amid 65 million Iranians.
The administration has sharply increased its rhetorical attacks on Iran in a way that is disquietingly similar to the campaign that led to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Take the current charge that the Quds Force is arming anti-American groups in Iraq and providing them with high-tech roadside bombs and sophisticated rockets.
There has also been a steady buildup of naval and air power in the region. A new aircraft carrier battle group has been assigned to the area, Patriot anti-missile missiles have been deployed, and U.S. Naval forces in the Eastern Mediterranean have been beefed up. MUCH MORE
On May 31st, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer stated that the US and Israel were planning on attacking Iran “in the near future.” Mr. Conyers, it seems that Bush and Cheney’s plans on attacking Iran are common knowledge, yet you still respond with meaningless letters that receive less press coverage than statements by Rush Limbaugh - so please, tell the public how Congress is going to stop this administration from starting another war? Please, we’re waiting for our Congress to do something that is meaningful and will thwart another war that will be the Coup de Gras’ on our fragile economy, and we all know that oil prices are continuing to rise because the international community knows that war with Iran is imminent, yet Congress still remains cowed and ineffective…
Fischer: US, Israel will attack Iran
Sat, 31 May 2008 04:16:42
Former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer says Israel is planning to attack Iran in the near future over its nuclear program.
He wrote a piece that appeared in today’s Daily Star, an English-language Lebanese newspaper, arguing that President Bush’s recent visit to the Middle East was a precursor to a war against Iran.
“He (Bush) seemed to be planning, together with Israel, to end the Iranian nuclear program — and to do so by military, rather than by diplomatic, means…. Although it is acknowledged in Israel that an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities would involve grave and hard-to-assess risks, the choice between acceptance of a nuclear Iran and an attempt at its military destruction, with all the attendant consequences, is clear. Israel won’t stand by and wait for matters to take their course,” Fischer said. MORE
