For several years there has been an effort to convince Israel to end the occupation and apartheid of Palestinian land through the use of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS). Recently, Philly BDS, www.phillybds.org, has initiated a boycott of Sabra and Tribe Hummus as a way for people to support the Palestinian struggle for freedom.
Northwest Greens is a non-partisan, neighborhood organization with 450 members, most of whom live in Germantown, MountAiry and Chestnut Hill. In a recent email poll, the members of Northwest Greens voted 93 percent in favor of endorsing and participating in the Philly BDS boycott of Sabra and Tribe Hummus.
The manufacturers of Sabra and Tribe Hummus subsidize Israeli human rights abuses through their support of the Israeli army and infrastructure of the occupation, respectively.
At a rally and Flashdance inside the Fresh Grocer at 40th and Walnut Streets in West Philadelphia, Hannah Schwartzschild said, "As a customer and a Jew, I hope that Fresh Grocer will heed the concerns of its community members and consider ceasing to distribute Sabra and Tribe Hummus. Not only would this be a huge step toward supporting the human rights of Palestinians and working for a more-just and peaceful Middle East, it would also serve to educate the community about the power of our consumer choices." Schwarzschild is a member of Philly BDS who lives in Germantown.
