Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Leon Panetta on Saturday held separate meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and discussed matters pertaining to the security situation in the region after the last year's Mumbai attacks and the Pakistan-US multi-faceted cooperation.

In the meeting at the Presidency, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Adviser on Interior Rehman Malik and US Ambassador in Islamabad Anne W Patterson were also present.

Meanwhile, during the meeting with Prime Minister Gilani, matters of mutual interest came under discussion.

The prime minister underscored the importance of early resolution of the core issue of Kashmir, something that would enable Pakistan to singlemindedly focus its attention on eradicating extremism and terrorism.

Leon Panetta expressed satisfaction over the existing cooperation between Pakistan and the US in various fields and commended the role of Pakistan's armed forces and institutions as the bulwark in the war against terrorism.

He assured the prime minister that the US administration would expedite the passage of Kerry-Lugar and other legislations in the Congress to provide Pakistan with required economic assistance and equipment and training facilities for its law-enforcement agencies to help it implement its three-pronged strategy in its campaign against terrorism.

AFP adds: New CIA chief Leon Panetta was in Pakistan on Saturday for high-level talks on a major review of the US strategy in the war against militants in South Asia, a Pakistani official said.

"It is his first visit as head of the CIA to the region, so he is looking to see what Pakistan is doing and how Pakistan views the ongoing review by the US administration," said a Pakistani official on condition of anonymity.

Panetta also held talks with Lieutenant General Ahmad Shuja Pasha, the Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence.

The US embassy in Islamabad was not immediately reachable for comment.

The top spy held talks on Thursday in India, where an official said discussions focused on New Delhi's security concerns over Pakistan and Afghanistan, particularly in the wake of November's Mumbai attacks.

Panetta's visit follows trips by US National Intelligence Director John Michael McConnell and Federal Bureau of Investigation chief Robert Mueller.
