The Iowa is visiting Richmond CA

The need for some restoration work is obvious.

Visitors are not required to take photos, but most do.

The USS Iowa (BB 61) is visiting Richmond CA for a bit of fund raising and refurbishing work and has public visiting hours on weekends.

The ship is en route to its new permanent home in the Los Angeles area and is now scheduled to arrive there sometime in May.

Until then, the public in the San Francisco area gets a chance to take an up close look and (for many) some photos.

On Saturday February 25, 2012, many of the visitors seemed to be former Navy personnel who had battleship experience, which is a good thing because the vessel needs volunteers to help with some restoration work.

The battleship was in the mothball fleet but has been acquired by the Pacific Battleship Center and is being moved to San Pedro in the Los Angeles area.

BP graduated from college in the mid sixties (at the bottom of the class?) He told his draft board that Vietnam could be won without his participation. He is still appologizing for that mistake. He received his fist photo lesson from a future (more...)
