The DC community--with Occupy DC--is organizing to confront the toxic links between Wall Street, the growing Private Prison Industry and Mass Incarceration. Wells Fargo is the major financer for the Rivers Correctional Institution in North Carolina, where thousands of D.C. residents are incarcerated"for profit!
More D.C. residents go to prison for parole violations than actually breaking the law; most of them end up in Rivers Correctional.
There are 60,000 people in D.C. with criminal records, about 10% of the population, and the number may be rising thanks to private industry, like Wells Fargo and GEO Group, that lobby for tough-on-crime legislation. Almost 50% of D.C. residents with a criminal record, most of whom are Black, do not have a job because it is lawful to discriminate against individuals for prior convictions, a.k.a. The New Jim Crow, propagated by private industry like Wells Fargo and GEO Group.
Wells Fargo owns $100 million of stock in GEO Group. Wells Fargo received $43 billion in taxpayer-funded bailouts from the government to aid people with their mortgages and loans, but has been putting D.C. Residents in prison while foreclosing on the homes of many hard-working D.C. families. We say Boycott Wells Fargo and eliminate the prison industry.
