Inside The GOP Mother's Day Card: All Warm And Fuzzy!
Republicans love all moms, so they say, and on Mother's Day what could be more heartwarming? The morning shows will be chock-full of politicians, and every one, regardless of party, will be wishing each and every mom in America a Happy Mother's Day! If they could send all moms a singing Hallmark card on this day, they surely would. Wouldn't that make moms happy? Maybe... But more than likely, most moms in this country would be happier to know which of these politicians actually care about and for children.
Take a look beyond the flowery words and look at the policies they support, and as moms, you will have no problem knowing which political party is planning hell for our children. The Republican budget plan that all members of the GOP party have endorsed, as the key to the economic future of our country, cuts health care for poor children, food assistance to our babies, including free breakfast and lunch programs, child protective services for the abused, early childhood education, day care and foster care, for starters. Their plan goes far beyond just these programs. They intend to dismantle every protection for children that this country has supported for decades. The defense budget, wealthy corporations, banks and oil companies will get cash and protection, but our kids? What will our kids get? Our kids will get the shaft!
Let's just cut to the chase, moms! The Republican party is planning hell for our children, the weakest and most vulnerable among us!
One thing is sure: Moms love their kids and if you hurt our kids, we will bring the battle to you! Don't tell us "Happy Mother's Day" in one breath and then expect us to sit still while you destroy the lives of our children. Keep your damn cards! Leave our kids alone!
The seed of Mother's Day in this country began with a proclamation in 1870, conceived and written by Julia Ward Howe, the author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Howe was devastated by all of the deaths during the Civil War and called upon mothers to protest killing.
She called for an international Mother's Day, celebrating peace and motherhood, and to point out how futile it was for one mother's son to kill another mother's son. What began as an idea to move a country forward has evolved into a commercial holiday. It is a boon to the flower, greeting card and chocolate industries, and just like other moms, I kind of love it!
But maybe, just for a moment on this Mother's Day, let us as moms say, "Hell is NOT for our children and we won't let you get away with it!"
