Day831/May1st/Sunday: The President announced from the East Room of the White House, " Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body." Transcript Video

The President declared a major disaster existed in the State of Tennessee and ordered Federal aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and associated flooding during the period of April 25-28, 2011. Federal funding was made available to affected individuals in the counties of Bradley, Greene, Hamilton, and Washington; including grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster. Federal funding was also made available to State and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis in the counties of Bradley, Greene, Hamilton, and Washington for debris removal and emergency protective measures. Federal funding was also made available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide. Source

The President and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a group of bipartisan leaders and ranking members and their spouses for a dinner in the East Room. The White House announced Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis, Tennessee was the winner of the 2011 Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge. Vice President Joseph Biden telephoned Principal Alisha Kiner to tell her the school had won. The school won the prize of having President Obama as their 2011 commencement speaker. Source Video

 

Day833/May3rd/Tuesday: The President honored the 2011 National Teacher of the Year Michelle Shearer , an AP chemistry teacher at Urbana High School in Maryland, and State Teachers of the Year in the Rose Garden of the White House. Transcript Video
