I just discovered I have been "suffering" for years now from Bovine Excrement Awareness Syndrome (BEAS) who knew? For years I thought my ability to smell BS a mile away was a gift, but as it turns out I am a victim. That is what the medical-psychiatric powers that be will have us all believe. For every possible feeling, emotion, thought, or physical characteristic they have a diagnosis for you and of course a subsequent pill to sell you. We used to be in the curing business but over several decades we have morphed into a "management society." There is more money to be made in managing disease than curing it. Nowhere is this more blatantly obvious than in the arena of psychiatry.
The billing manual for Psychiatry is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Created in the 1950s, the original DSM ran 130 pages and described 106 conditions. By 1994 there were now 297 conditions spanning close to 900 pages. That's a lot of illness developing quickly in this country! I think I feel my condition kicking in again! Now the new DSM (5) is under consultation and due to be released in 2013. The early leaking of the new conditions being created are startling and alarming. For instance, if you spend a lot of time thinking about sex, you will now be classified as having "Hypersexual Disorder." Only in America, where you are bombarded with sexual messages in every source of media, can you then be blamed for being preoccupied with sex AND now be diagnosed as having a mental disorder because of it!
Having trouble beating your wife or abusing your kids? Don't worry you are merely suffering from a "Relational Disorder." You know someone who doesn't seem to get along well with others? Well they are also suffering it seems from "Anti-Social Personality Disorder. Unhappy children who like to throw temper tantrums? Ahhh, relax parents they are under the control of "Temper Dysregulation Disorder with Dysphoria."
You couldn't make this stuff up folks. Yet that is exactly what they are doing. The psychiatric powers that be simply observe normal human behavior and classify it into disorders. Why? To self-perpetuate the field of psychiatry and to sell you medication. Prior to the DSM, psychiatry mostly dealt with psychotics. But there wasn't a lot money or prestige in that so they started targeting mainstream America. The neurotic model is what followed. The truth is that there is no such thing as "normal human behavior." We all have our quirks, habits, and idiosyncrasies which by definition is what makes us human. But by creating this notion that there is a normality to aspire to, they also created the notion that by definition we are all not in correct alignment somehow. The Brady Bunch is not real they were a parody on what normal was supposed to be.
Let me try it this way. If someone came to you and said, "Look, you are entirely too happy. You are always smiling, thinking the best, looking at the glass as half full, and helping your fellow neighbor with a smile and a song in your heart. I am sorry but that level of happiness is simply not normal. Here is a pill I want you to start taking so that your emotional levels will come back into the mainstream of what is considered normal. Would you accept that? Would you take that pill? Well, periods of being sad are equally normal in the realm of human behavior but they will tell you that a pill will magically solve your problems. But here is the truth. The pill does not solve the problem, it only masks the symptoms. If you went to the doctor and said you were having pain in your left foot because there was a nail in it and all he did was give you something for the pain would you go back to that doctor? Of course not. But if he removes the nail, you will heal. A healed patient doesn't come back.
