What TV Show Deal or No Deal Teaches Our Leaders

Howie Mandel, TV show host of Deal or No Deal asks the question of his participants "deal or no deal" in their quest to win a $1 million prize by offering them various deals and dollar amounts.   Our present budget situation and the players involved remind me of Deal or No Deal.   Starring as the show host is President Obama. And starring as the players are Congress. In the show, the players in playing for a million dollars are often affected by greed, lack of judgment and lack of common sense which ultimately causes many to lose what little money they could have won.   In the present situation, President Obama just wants a deal done but he is not willing to break the bank to get one done.   Same is true in the TV show, Howie Mandel tries to encourage the show participants to take a deal but he is not willing to break the "banker" to get the deal done.   He always appears as the reasonable one in the show. Ditto for President Obama in the deficit talks.

The GOP Congress is greedy, wanting to keep tax cuts for their rich and corporate pals. They are acting in their own selfish interest and not in the interest of the country.   They would rather wreck the economy than end tax giveaways for their corporate donors, despite the fact that most Americans say it's time to get rid of tax breaks for millionaires and big oil corporations. Just as on the show, the TV participants act selfishly and often times wind up with nothing or lose everything in the process. The TV participants often give up what is in their best interest to satisfy their greed. And that gets them nowhere, most times.   They usually end up walking away empty handed. And in this case, it's the American people who will end up losing and walking away empty handed. Even Wall Street executives say a failure to avoid a default on our nation's debt would have a "severe and long lasting impact."

President Obama wants the deal done. It goes to the heart of his promise to this country when he ran. He ran on "Can we do big things?"   But, people in Washington, meaning GOP legislators, don't want it done. They would rather act like the participants on Deal or No Deal, like greedy, selfish morons.

As between President Obama and the GOP Congress, who's to blame if a deal can't be done? That's the easy question.   The answer is, as Roger Simon of Politico put it,     the "Bozos" of the congress who are unpatriotic, selfish and self-serving.   They love power more than they love this country, according to Simon. It's healthy when political parties disagree but we can't forget that we're all Americans first.

And who's at fault for these leaders in the first place? Simon says we need look no further than ourselves. Some of us stayed home and didn't vote in midterm 2010 and others voted for these GOP "Bozos". So when we end up in dire straits, we have no one to blame except ourselves. Next time around, we might want to reverse our votes and vote them out.   I just hope it won't be too late.
