Israel's Nuclear Weapons
For 14 years during the Cold War I was in contact with the Jewish Community at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Many students had brilliant scientific and engineering potential. Sometimes, they referred to M.I.T. as USSR target number one.
In those days many of us were fresh from the Holocaust experience still unable to cope with the horror and devastation of it. As a start, we could support Israel. Before the June War the survival of the nation was an open question. The Arabs had a 40-to-one advantage in population. The Russian military aid to Egypt was awesome.
These factors went into the nuclear weapons development. From the beginning it was defensive only to prevent the country from being overrun. The situation demanded a unique weapons profile. Suitcase a-bombs could reach far off targets. They needed neutron bombs to avoid damaging religious and historical sites. Because the Middle East is crowded the Israelis built 'clean' warheads to reduce radioactive contamination.
The Israelis maintained the highest secrecy until Mordechai Vanunu in 1986 broke the news of 200 nuclear warheads in the Israel arsenal. Officials have never confirmed or denied this account. Although many Israelis disagree with me, I maintain that Vanunu is a great Israeli patriot. He spoke for transparency.
Any serious incursion on Israelis will be countered by massive nuclear retaliation. Aggressors will be punished. Sane leaders in the Middle East recognize this and during recent years have toned down their rhetoric. They realize their power will diminish if all their citizens are dead.
Unfortunately, Ahmadinejad of Iran courts the destruction of his people. He backs his fierce rhetoric and threats with development of a nuclear bomb. American intelligence reports by 2010 he will have the bomb and sufficient materials for 50 more. Why hasn't Iran been destroyed?
It was Unnecessary for Bush to Use His Full Dictatorial Powers
The US public failed to give Bush enough static to force his hand. As long as he could pick off whistle blowers and dissidents one by one, he seemed satisfied. His corrupt system virtually ruled the roost without serious opposition throughout his reign.
George Bush enjoyed the image of being President and perks that went with it. He did not impress as a doer such as Ronnie Reagan, or Barack Obama or Makmud Ahmadinejad.
If George had a serious weed up his butt, he didn't make a show of it. We should be grateful that he only ruined the economy. If his handlers wanted him to, he could have turned the world into a cinder.
Brent Scowcroft and Z. Brzezinski against Destruction of Iran
In recent testimony before the Congress both claimed that despite his raving hostility, Makmud is not insane. He will not bomb Israel.
The West should not destroy Iran, but rather negotiate for disarmament.
The Flies in the Ointment
Scowcroft and Brzezinski do not disclose the full information. Turkey and Saudi Arabia believe Ahmadinejad is mad and will launch everything he has. They doubt America's promise to defend them and want to build their own nuclear deterrence.
