Would the real World Government please stand up?

In December 2009, at the G8 summit, Russian President Medvedev pulled out of his pocket his vision for a supranational world currency, thus demonstrating the leading industrial powers intentions for the future. First global economic union, then, inevitably, global political union. What was once in the realms of conspiracy theorist websites and books, might actually be a real option on the worlds table. Maybe they're not as crazy as we all first thought?

Talk about world governance isn't new. It has been peddled by many as the solution to our world's problems. The first genuinely effective move towards a form of world government occured after the First World War, when the victorious allies founded the League of Nations in an attempt to curb dangerous nationalist behaviour in Europe and Asia and hopefully prevent another World War. Unfortunately, they weren't collectively commited or strong enough to prevent Germany and Japan from leaving the League and ultimately starting the Second World War. Once again, the law of the jungle prevailed, the rule of law reduced to a mere observer as millions of innocent people died. Thankfully, lessons would be learned.

The United Nations was founded in 1945. Where the League of Nations failed, the U.N would succeed. The Cold War had a huge infuence in the success of the U.N, giving the United States and the Soviet Union a platform to both help and heed each other without resulting to force of arms. The U.N became the world police, intervening in many wars worldwide, including the Korean War which was the first large-scale U.N-led intervention. Since the U.N was founded, many citizen led movements have been created advocating or even calling for the foundation of a world government. One of the most prominant is the World Federalist Movement, who call for a world federal government to be established to prevent the horrors of the twentieth century from ever happening again.

During the last half of the twentieth century, the world has been moving closer and closer to global integration. The path to world government is a slow and arduous one. Europe has been playing the role of guinea pig since the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community in the 1950's. It would be near impossible to get all the world's nations to agree to world government without an intermediary stage, that is, by forming local unions. The European Union is the prototype world government, and after the experiment in Europe is complete, it will be exported to the rest of the world. The Americas, Asia, The Pacific and The Middle East will form their own union. Did I forget to mention there is ALREADY an African Union? Didn't hear about that? Well, not alot of people know about it. Once all of these unions have been established, they can then all be brought under the banner of world government.

The European Community along with the United Nations, has for sixty years maintained peace in Europe and has prevented another World War. It is promising that the rest of the world might experience the peace and stability Europe has experienced by letting go of old ideas and hatreds, by embracing the new ideas, the new ideas of global community, international brotherhood and world peace. Detractors of the idea of world government claim this will take away peoples rights and erode cultures and destroy local heritage. They don't quite realise that it's already too late. The world is already culturally converging, mass movements of peoples and ideas are creating a mix of old and new, Eastern and Western. It's important to remember that culture is transitory, it's fliud, it changes and evolves. World government is evolution, from the hut to the village, from the village to the city-state, from the city to the Nation State, and finally the transformation into a Global Community.

President Medvedev's recent display of a prototype world currency shows the leadership is ready, all we need now is for the people of the world to stand together and say "We've had enough of wars and hatred, never again. Would the real World Government please stand up?"
