Will Amnesty 07 Die Until after the 2008 Election?

Will Mexican Vice-Presidente George Bush AGAIN fail the people of Mexico?

June 7, 2007

"My pledge to you and your government -- but more importantly, the people of Mexico -- is that I'll work as hard as I possibly can to pass comprehensive immigration reform," President George Bush said at a ceremony welcoming him to Merida, Mexico.

"Together we're working to ensure that we have a secure and modern border that speeds the legitimate flow of people..." Bush said on March 14, 2007.

Only 56 days later on May 9, 2007, after lengthy consultations with Arizona Republican Senator Jon Kyl, Democratic Senator Harry Reid of Nevada introduced the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007

PART II -

Kyl appears to be listening … to us and not Bush!

Tonight we’ll know if they’ve heard us - stay tuned.

In the 110th Congress of the United States, be it known that on June 7th 2007 at 11:41am Senator Kennedy introduced a motion to invoke Cloture on Senate Bill 1348.

If passed, this motion would have ended once and for all any future debate on this massive immigration debacle and forced an up or down Senate vote which in all likelihood would have passed. According to Senator Kyl, a negotiator of the proposed legislation, “… the president was ready to sign it into law”.

Arizona Senator Jon Kyl, although taking considerable flack from his state party for his role in the birth of this legislation, appeared to be listening to his constituents and voted to defeat the cloture motion.

Presidential hopeful, brave Senator John McCain, strode boldly into the fray and followed Senator Kerry’s leadership, by declining to vote on the motion. Thus insuring he can claim any position on the matter during the heat of the coming campaign.

The Senate has scheduled another vote on the motion for Thursday evening. If however the resistance remains and Senator Kennedy’s motion is once again defeated, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 will most likely die a well-deserved ignominious death for this legislative season.

Of the over 20 amendments put forward, Amendment 1131 of the Reform Act stands out. It requires border enforcement before amnesty can be granted. This amendment was of course defeated. Imagine that.

The other amendment to note is 1184. This would have established a permanent bar for gang members, terrorists, and other criminals from entering the country. Not surprising, this amendment failed.

I urge everyone to look at how the Senate voted and to use the links to the amendments so you may be better informed.

There are very slick letters coming from the Arizona delegation these days – are they being straight up – or are they using spin to get us to back off? I received just such a letter yesterday from Senator Kyl. In it he proclaims what “… conservatives have been able to win … in a new immigration reform bill.” Win?? What have we won with over 20 million illegal immigrants occupying our communities and 750,000 more coming each year? For perspective, 750,000 is equal to the population of San Francisco California, each year.

PART III -

Top Down or Bottom Up?

Aye, there be the question …

Remember, if you are going to support legislation, then please read the legislation – if you are going to support the man without knowing the legislation, you belong in another political party. Look around; again the system devised by our Founding Fathers appears to be working.

For far too long, the Republican Party of Arizona has been driven by the orders of its Congressional delegation. Perhaps now the balance has been restored. Perhaps now it is the grassroots, the base, it is the individual members who drive and set the agenda. Perhaps now those elected to represent us actually will begin to take their cue from us, acting in accordance with our wishes. That is, in fact what a representative form of government is all about – WE the PEOPLE.

Blind adherence and obedience to a party leader or political delegation is what the Communist or National Socialist parties were known for. This is the Republican Party – keyword? REPUBLIC.

PART IV –

How have they voted? What are the Amendments?

Lets review now how both Arizona Senators have voted on the various amendments to this sweeping legislation, as well as how the Presidential hopefuls from the U.S. Senate have voted. The most interesting of these are those in which the Republicans vote exactly as the Democrats.

And, as this chart illustrates, if you want to become President from the US Senate, the best course of true leadership is to avoid all votes as John McCain and Chris Dodd illustrate for us.
