There is an ancient story about a shepherd who had a large flock of sheep. The sheep roamed about, trying to escape from the shepherd who they knew wanted their wool, skins and meat. Sometimes they would fall into ravines, getting stuck in fences, causing the shepherd much time and effort to get them back into the flock safely.
He thought and thought and finally came up with a plan. He hypnotised the sheep and told them that they were free, that there was no shearer to take their wool, no butcher to take their meat, so there was no reason to flee.
They were hypnotised, so they believed him and contentedly ate the grass, stayed out of the ravines and did not get stuck in the fence. In fact, there was no more need of fences, so that was a saving for the magician/shepherd.
Of course, he still took their wool, hides and meat, when the time came, but they did not run away or complain or realize their fate until it was too late.

The sheep continued to eat the grass; content in the knowledge that nothing bad was going to happen to them. No one was coming to shear the wool (the sweat of their labour), no one was coming to take their skins (their houses), and no one was coming to take their meat (their very lives).
Some one once said that there are only two things certain in life – taxes and death. Looks like that's all the American population can look forward to – unless...
