URGENT - need your faxing today and calls on Monday!!! for Herons, Hawks & Eagles' protection

friend ~

Can you PLEASE fax a letter - at LEAST TO the Chair of this Committee - Lois Wolk (and also to our office) TODAY!? Support from your organization would be fabulous. Maybe you can also see if others could do the same? I know you know of some in the wildlife advocacy arena who ought to be helpful in getting faxes and calls in. There is a sample letter and all the info you need below.

Faxing to ALL of the committee members would be helpful, but if you can only get to the chair and our office, that would be ok too! If you know anyone who lives in the districts of these representatives, it would be great for them to fax to that particular committee person. There are 15 offices we are asking you to fax to, as well as to ours. 16 letters, faxes and calls to protect these majestic birds - Herons, Hawks & Eagles (including several species, including the White-tailed Kite, Snowy Egret, Great Blue Heron and the American Bald Eagle).....please do this today!

*You* will really like the language in this latest version of the bill. However others do NOT like it....

There is a Water, Parks & Wildlife Committee hearing Tuesday morning - and they are getting lots of pressure from the Farm Bureau and the Realtors Assn. to not support this. It is REALLY important we get this supported by 8 members of the committee (and the votes are VERY close at the moment) - or the effort will be done for this year (and our author, Paul Koretz is termed out at the end of this year, so let's pour the steam on!!!!)

Thank you so much. Phone calls to these offices on Monday are ALSO ***crucial***!

for the birds,
Marcia

HELLO ~ This week I know many of you are especially doing something for Earth Day - please consider taking this action, for the Earth here in California ~

As you know, our organizations have been working for a number of years to protect a Great Blue Heron rookery at/near the Ballona Wetlands and also Egret and Black Crowned Night Heron nesting sites near Malibu Lagoon and in Marina del Rey. Those who have made similar efforts know there is a loophole that allows someone to destroy a nest or a nesting tree(s) as soon as there is no longer nesting activity in the nest, even though birds like Herons, Egrets, Hawks, White-tailed Kites and Eagles return to their same nests.

California Assemblymember Paul Koretz is doing something about it! He has introduced legislation that would fix this loophole. The proposed bill is AB1924, and you can read the latest version of it at: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/bill/asm/ab_1901-1950/ab_1924_bill_20060417_amended_asm.html

You can check http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/bilinfo.html to watch for any future updates on this bill.

In the meantime, we need your help! NOW! The Water, Parks & Wildlife Committee is scheduled to hear this bill NEXT Tuesday, April 25. It is important that EACH of the committee members receive letters from your organization.

Please FAX a letter TODAY to the following Assemblymembers. And also fax Paul Koretz' office and our office a copy of your letter. That's 17 faxes - preferably individually addressed and faxed. For the Herons, Egrets, Kites, Hawks & Eagles!

Here is a sample letter. Please send it on letterhead if you can. Individual letters are just fine too! IF you do not have time to send letters to all, then please at least send to the Committee Chair, to us (at Wetlands Action Network/CLEAN) and to Assemblymember Koretz' office. But if you at all can, it would be VERY helpful to send to all 17 fax machines - AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!
