Tell them you love Conspiracy Theories as well Part 2

UFOs? In the US, in the 50s? Why such a bright lot of out-of-this-worlders would pick the only country that could have used the Atom bomb against them, is not explained. However we have been left with the legacy of the Flying Saucer conspiracy.

No disrespect to complete lunatics, but come on, if a higher intelligence was going to buzz anywhere it would be Scotland. (For non-Scots, this is meant to be ironic as indeed, many Central Scotland dwellers have now joined the faithful ranks of those claiming to have seen a UFO.)

I have never been a fan of space travel. My older brother said "We made it into space" Sorry? Firstly, "we". If the Russians, the bitter enemy in '61, made it, how was it such a shared glory? Secondly, is that all? I had "Buck Rogers the Galaxy" chewing gum cards and I thought "we" had been to the Milky One.. I was underwhelmed. Sputnik? It bleeps you say? A dog next you say? OK. Wake me up when "we" hit the moon.

No, the moonshot did not take place. It was faked wasn't it? I wish it had been. The space programme was the most stupendous waste of energy and resources imaginable. Kennedy could have challenged the Soviets to a race to feed the last hungry child on the planet, but he lacked the vision. He went for the spectacular. He continued the race that eventually drove the Soviets into the dust. He could have turned the dust itself into productive farms with less effort. What a missed opportunity.

In later years I watched the Challenger disaster and bitterly said "Well at least they can't put the Star Wars system into operation". No one heard me thank goodness. I had been so angry at this folly that my humanity failed me. I turned righteously and saw my young son in tears. He said "Has..has.. the teacher ..died ..as well?" A lesson from a 7 year old.
