Sheep and goats

Matthew 25: 32-33And he will separate them one from another,
as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

Do you believe that we all stand before the throne of God after we die, and are judged for how we acted in life? In Matthew 25, Jesus makes it plain that the judgment is based on our behavior toward those less fortunate than ourselves. Here's what happens to the goats:

41-44: Then he will say to those on his left,
'Depart from me, you accursed,
into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
For I was hungry and you gave me no food,
I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
a stranger and you gave me no welcome,
naked and you gave me no clothing,
ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.'
Then they will answer and say,
'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty
or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison,
and not minister to your needs?'
He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you,
what you did not do for one of these least ones,
you did not do for me.'

What will happen to the Congresspeople who voted to cut food stamps, and Medicaid, and student loans? How many of them claim to be Christians, and believe in a judgment after death? How can they live with themselves?

Those who believe that the story from Matthew 25 is a parable, not necessarily to be taken literally, still can separate the sheep from the goats. Let's do it at the polls in 2006! Let's get rid of the heartless lackeys of profit-driven corporations.

Let us replace them all with representatives of the people, who will care for the poor and needy. Their first act should be to impeach Bush and Cheney, if they are not gone by then. These monsters have repeatedly demonstrated their callousness toward those who are hungry, and especially toward prisoners, whom they deny even the rudiments of justice, and torture at will.

Let us send the goats, those in the executive branch and those in the legislature, into the eternal fire of public condemnation.
