Have you heard the one about . . .
Perhaps you have. Most assuredly, however you’ve heard the one told by Senator John McCain, the Republican aspirant to the White House, as an illustration of government pork, about the $3 million bear DNA study: “I don’t know whether it was a paternity issue, or criminal, but it was a total waste of time and money.”
Hah, hah, hah; a good one Senator.
Not! The truth of the matter is that the “study” was a US Geological Survey project that was commissioned to determine the health of the grizzly bear population in the Northern Continental Divide ecosystem; a requisite to the never previously obtained scientific evidence needed for classification of the species as either threatened or not. The DNA Senator McCain jokingly refers to was obtained via hair samples left on strategically placed barbed wire strands.
The tragic truth of the “issue” is that very few Montana ranchers in the Glacier National Park area regard the “Endangered Species” classification of grizzlies quite as humorously as does the Arizona senator.
Sadly, the “joke” says a great deal more about the joker and those laughing at it than the world can any longer afford to bear.
For the past seven-plus years, the United States and the world have watched aghast as White House scientific policy has been driven by politics and 100% disrespect for science. Indeed, we’ve seen Oval Office scientific reports edited by an attorney lobbyist for the mining and energy industries. When the concern concerns global climate change, can we truly afford at least another four years of such a disastrously Newspeak joke?
Hah, hah, hah . . . yeah? Except, I’m not laughing any more.
