I asked my mother, "What's it all about?"
She looked at me sort of stunned
And answered, "It just is"
I realized, then and there
That she didn't have any answers
It was a little scary
But, it set me on my path
To discover for myself,
what "It just is" is all about
Since then, I've checked out
Religion
Philosophy
Science
And politics
In an effort to discover
What "It just is" is
What have I come up with?
Well, I didn't find it in
Religion
Philosophy
Science
Or politics
But, I didn't find it in Atheism, either
So, where did I find it?
I found it in the, no-frills, here and now
I found it in the every-day day
I found it in the every-man man and the every-woman woman
I found it in the every-day sunrise and sunset
I found it in the common sounds of wind, birds, cars, and trains
I found it in ordinary laughter, tears, and despair
I found it in the usual tides and the moon
I found it in my beautiful wife and offspring
I found it in that little cut on my finger
I found it in that damn dog-sh*t on my shoe
I found it in the blessed ruins of the Twin Towers
I found it in the shaming screams of the prisoners at Abu Graib
I find it everywhere I look
I find it in everyone I meet
I find it in everything I smell
I find it in everything I taste
I find it in everything I feel
I find it in these thoughts
I find it in these words
I find it in this moment
And I realize now
That without even knowing it
My mother was right about everything
It just is
