A Desperate Need for Visionary Leadership

Message Joseph Simonetta
When the founding principles upon which a country was formed, its very essence, are violated and defiled by its leaders, it is the duty of the people to arise in opposition.

An aggressive, unelected United States regime has destroyed our economy, bankrupted our treasury, raped our environmental regulations, neglected medical care for our elderly, ignored our children's education, triggered international angst, and has destabilized our country and our world. A majority of our spineless elected representatives has rewarded this regime with the virtual unrestricted right to wage an unjustified war with Iraq.

The Bush administration, staffed almost entirely by those who have never soldiered, have sacrificed callously the children of our poor, black, and brown, and countless Iraqi civilians and children to advance their imperialistic ambitions. When this administration talks of war with Iraq, it admits to no human or financial costs while both are grave. Conversely, this devious administration traffics in classic Orwellian doublespeak language such as anticipatory self-defense, benevolent hegemonic intervention (dominance), and the Patriot Act (an egregious violation of our Bill of Rights).

This is an administration whose president, a textbook example of cronyism, and vice-president are entangled in unresolved multi-billion-dollar energy company scandals (Harken and Halliburton). Yet these "leaders" would have us believe that their unjustified anti-Iraq hysteria is not motivated by either their lust for Iraqi oil or their desire to divert America's attention from their own epic domestic and international failures at leadership.

With generalized threats and half-truths as his explanation, each one challenged and revealed to be shallow, a president who skirted his own military service, failed to serve out his time in our National Guard, and flagrantly ignores world opinion, continues to orchestrate a spectacle so sorry and lethal that it has advanced us only toward the Stone Age. His is an aggressive precedent that will enable any nation of any size to exercise brute force anywhere in the world without regard to international law or consensus.

This president has provided us with a formula, not for sustainability in our world, but for sustained chaos. As those of more reasoned minds have come to understand in our world already fraught with complicated environmental perils, as approximately 1,500,000 more people join the human population each week, we have neither the time, resources, or energy to fight with each other. Humanity is in desperate need of visionary leadership.

Let the facts be known.

-- There are no grounds to be at war with Iraq.
-- "Regime change" is a matter to be decided by the Iraqi people not by foreign invaders.
-- The hostile invasion and occupation of Iraq by the United States, a violation of international law, has agonized and alienated the Iraqi people.
-- The U.S. attack on Iraq has resulted in the avoidable deaths of countless human beings.
-- The U.S. attack on Iraq has inflamed passions in the Middle East, further destabilized an already destabilized Muslim world, and resulted in an increase of worldwide terrorism.
-- The U.S. attack on Iraq, is an unwise, unjust, and unnecessary expenditure of precious funds in perilous economic times.
-- The U.S. attack on Iraq has diverted our needed attention from a faltering economy, staggering budget deficits, and the unmet and urgent needs of our people.
-- The U.S. attack on Iraq has isolated the United States from the rest of the world, created mortal revenge-seeking enemies, and resulted in the loss of the moral high ground upon which the United States once stood.
-- The U.S. attack on Iraq has decimated America's image in the eyes of the world.
-- The U.S. attack on Iraq has jeopardized the present and future security of the United States.

The real evil that must be confronted is any human's willingness to put the life of a man, woman, or child in harm's way to serve narrow and devious interests that violate the very principles that sustain life. Such actions must be resisted by people of intelligence and strength.
